We’re looking for an enthusiastic student to join us for an internship in collaboration with our team Kadaster International (KI) and the Geo Expertise Center (GEC). In this role, you’ll dive into the world of satellite imagery and artificial intelligence, helping to shape the future of topographic map production. We’re looking for a:
GEO Intern
Information
Topographic maps are essential for various sectors such as urban planning, navigation, and environmental monitoring. However, the map production process in many countries remains outdated, often relying on slow and traditional methods. With the rise of new technologies like satellite imagery and AI, there is a significant opportunity to improve the speed and accuracy of topographic map production. The challenge lies in the limited adoption of these new techniques, due to factors such as lack of knowledge, trust, experience, and legal and cultural constraints.
Problem definition
- Many countries still rely on outdated topographical maps.
- The map production process is manual and labor-intensive.
- There is resistance to change, with limited willingness to adopt new technologies.
- A gap exists in understanding the potential and limitations of new techniques, especially satellite imagery and AI.
Objective
A theoretical study and assessment on data quality, applicability, and prerequisites for the implementation of satellite imagery and AI-based image recognition for fit for purpose topographic mapping.
Internship tasks
- Research availability, resolution, and quality of satellite imagery for mapping applications.
- Assess suitability of satellite data for different topographic scales and features.
- Explore AI-based image recognition techniques (e.g., object detection, landform classification) and change detection to automate feature extraction.
- Compare AI-enhanced satellite workflows with traditional aerial photo interpretation (accuracy, efficiency, cost).
- Identify technical and organizational prerequisites for adopting satellite images and AI in national mapping workflows.
- Compose and publish a review article on the current state of affairs.
- Provide practical recommendations for phased implementation or pilot use.
Learning opportunities
- Gain insight into the use of AI for geospatial feature recognition (e.g., roads, buildings, vegetation).
- Develop skills in geospatial data analysis, and emerging mapping technologies.
- Contribute to innovation in modern, data-driven topographic map production.
Ideal for students with a strong interest in geography, AI, remote sensing, and geospatial innovation.
Het Kadaster
Kadaster provides certainty through transparency about the ownership and use of real estate and public space. This is our legal duty, directed by the Ministry of “Volkshuisvesting en Ruimtelijke Orderning” (VRO).
Using our geo-data, we contribute to addressing societal challenges, such as the energy transition, the housing market, or developing land rights systems in countries like Colombia or Benin. This makes working at Kadaster diverse and meaningful. More information? Watch our video!
The team
You will be joining the Kadaster Geo Expertise Center (GEC), a team within the Space & Real Estate department. The team consists of fifteen colleagues who are passionate about working on societal challenges related to geo-information. Each team member brings their own specific expertise.
Every day, we explore new possibilities in data, technologies, and processes, and we make them applicable in practice. Examples include 3D, BRT-next, automated image recognition, and European collaborations. You’ll work independently most of the time, but your colleagues are always ready to help when you need support.
Your profile
You are studying at ITC, the University of Twente’s Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation. You are interested in geography, AI, remote sensing, and geo-innovation. The internship is open to both national and international students. You are available starting from September or October 2025.
We offer
You will be working in a pleasant and supportive environment where you’ll have plenty of space to ask questions and develop yourself. We believe it’s important that you learn from us, and we might learn something from you too!
In addition, we offer you:
- strong internship guidance. Your internship supervisor is an expert in the field, will guide you professionally, and is available to answer your questions;
- a laptop to use during your internship;
- hybrid working. Partly from home and partly at the office. Your main location is our office in Zwolle. The location is easily accessible by public transport;
- access to over 250 training courses in our own digital learning environment, so you can continue to grow and challenge yourself alongside your internship tasks;
- an internship allowance of €565 gross per month (based on a 36-hour internship week).
Interested?
